Lucky for you, we are not going to bore you with marketing jargon and spin. Instead we are going to use a medical professional to answer these questions. Susie Kelly is a Nurse Practitioner and triathlete who has competed over all distances, and has done quite well. She is also a great fountain of information and has written a number of posts about the importance of Salt Supplementation in sports. So lets get on with the questions... I am interested in learning more about BASE salts. I am a triathlete who had an episode of severe hyponatremia following an Ironman Triathlon in 2014. My sodium level dropped to 116 and I was hospitalized in an ICU for a few days. I recently underwent sweat testing which showed that I lose an extremely high level of electrolytes. The recommendation is that I I replace 3225mg of sodium per hour and 4354mg of potassium per hour during activity based on my results. My sweat sodium concentration was 171 mmol/L. I also have a lower sweat rate, so I have to be careful how much fluid I take in as well. Anyway, I am just trying to sort through this as I would like to continue with longer course racing, but only if I can do it safely. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! Jen
