Rock and Roll Denver Half Marathon Race Report
Going into the race being my first half marathon I didn’t expect a lot. I did hope to get under 2 hours, but I wouldn’t be disappointed if I didn’t as long as I ran a good race. The temperature was in the low 40’s, it was cold, but there wasn’t any rain as had been forecasted and the sun would make an appearance, which was nice.
I started the first two miles slowly running around 9:50 and 9:30ish just trying to warm up and get into it. I picked it up to around 8:50-8:40 minute miles for the next 6 miles just trying to stay under 9 minute miles so I could finish in under 2 hours. At around mile 7 I wasn’t sure if I would beat 2 hours if I couldn’t keep the pace in the second half of the race if I started to fade. Fortunately, I was still feeling really good at mile 8 so I decided to push it a little bit just to see what I could do while keeping a good pace through the rest of the race. There was an out and back section where I was able to see the 2 hour race pacer, so I knew I could catch him in the next 5 miles. The 8th mile I got to an 8:02, I was still feeling good and just kept that pace going, the next 3 miles I was between 7:58 and 8:02. In the 11th mile I passed the 2 hour pacer and knew that I could actually get in under 2 hours. The final 1.1 mile was in 8:16 and my total time was 1:54:27.
I am actually surprised with how good I felt through out the whole race, it was a great validation of the training I have been doing for my first 70.3 which is in 3 weeks. This race has given me a little boost in confidence that I just might be ready for Ironman Miami 70.3.
